LinkedIn is a social media platform dedicated to connecting with professionals within various industries. This is great news for traditional industries, but should we use it for the music industry?

Yes! LinkedIn provides you unique opportunities to connect with people within the music industry. Create a profile and start filling out all of the profile fields that you can. I recommend that you fill out the fields with a goal of attracting people within the music industry. For example, if you currently work in an unrelated field, try not to highlight that fact. Instead, focus on what you want people to focus on.

Once you fill out your profile as best as you can, you can now start applying to get into groups. LinkedIn groups are designed to group industry professionals together. Take advantage of this! Start by applying to groups you want to be a part of (music business, audio engineering, marketing, etc.) It will take some time to get accepted into these groups, so let us continue.

The next thing to do is to build your network. The simplest way to do this is to add friends or acquaintances you know. Send them a connect request! If you are shy, I recommend scouting their profiles. If you do this (and your privacy settings are set to allow people to see that you have viewed them), they will receive a notification stating that you have viewed their profile. If your lucky, they might send you the connect request as you are now on their radar.

Overall, I recommend the use of LinkedIn to music professionals. Remember to fill out your profile, join groups, send connect invites, and scout profiles!
